HARDOI - Three Uttar Pradesh policemen have been booked for murder of an old man, who allegedly died after being assaulted by them in the state’s Hardoi district, officials said Friday.

The three policemen — a sub-inspector and two constables — late Thursday evening went to sort out some land dispute between Ram Khilawan, 60 and his neighbours in the Jairajpur village of the district, around 100 km from the state capital.

According to the family members, the three cops forced Ram Khilawan to apologise to his neighbours and later started beating him when he refused to do so. Ram Khilawan died on the spot, following which the policemen fled from the spot, threatening the family not to report the matter to the authorities, officials added.

“On the basis of the preliminary investigations, we decided to book the three policemen for murder of the old man,” Hardoi Superintendent of Police O.P. Sagar told reporters.

The three have also been suspended.
