MICHIGAN (GaeaTimes.com)- A 20 year old boy from Michigan has been accused of stealing food from his neighbor’s home and now has an arrest warrant to his name. Matthew Hummel however is no ordinary boy. The youngster is a patient of the Prader Willi Syndrome, the sufferers of which crave for an enormous quantity of food throughout the day. It has been reported that Matthew Hummel has been stealing food from the neighborhood for quite some time now, his neighbor complaining that he could think of no other alternative but take the help of the police.
Matthew’s father Travis Hummel says that he is “helpless” at his son’s condition. The 20 year old has been suffering from the Prader Willi Syndrome since the age of three and his condition has shown rapid deterioration over the years. If reports are to be believed, the food cupboards and refrigerators inside the Hummel house remain locked at all times in order to keep Matthew Hummel away from food and hence the boy has now decided to obtain the same from his neighbor’s place, even attacking the trash bins of his locality. Medical practitioners say that one of the chief signs of a Prader Willi Syndrome patient is the rapid functioning of the brain’s hypothalamus as a result of which they need large quantities of food.
Matthew Hummel has also been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and mild Autism. His father says that he will send his son to a home for Prader Willi Syndrome patients. The Hummels are even considering erecting a fence around their home to prevent Matthew Hummel venturing into his neighbor’s houses.
