French prosecutor seeks 30 years for cannibal

ROUEN, France — A French prosecutor is seeking a prison term of 30 years for a prisoner accused of killing his cellmate and eating part of his lung.

Prosecutor Elisabeth Pelsez says 39-year-old Nicolas Cocaign should get treatment in prison. She says she didn’t request a life sentence, the maximum possible in France, because experts said he was mentally unstable.

Cocaign is charged with murder and acts of barbarism at the trial in the Normandy city of Rouen. Cocaign acknowledged responsibility for the 2007 killing in his testimony this week.

A medical examiner testified that the victim was still alive when Cocaign cut open his chest.

A verdict is expected later Thursday.
