Woman charged after British lawmaker attacked
LONDON — A 21-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after a British lawmaker was stabbed during a weekly meeting with his constituents.
London police said Saturday the woman also faces two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.
Stephen Timms, a lawmaker who represents the London constituency of East Ham, was attacked Friday afternoon. The Royal London Hospital says he underwent surgery on his wounds, and would be released in the next few days.
The 54-year-old Timms was the financial secretary to the treasury in former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government. A member of the Labour Party, he has represented East Ham since 1994.
Roshonara Choudhary appears in court Monday.
