DJIBOUTI, REPUBLIC OF DJIBOUTI (GaeaTimes.com)- It has been reported that a warship belonging to the Unites States navy, the USS Ashland, had captured possible pirates on Saturday The incident occurred some 300 nautical miles off the capital city of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa. According to reports provided by the United States 5th Fleet, the USS Ashland is one of the ships that are part of the United States anti-piracy flotilla that makes rounds of the highly pirate plagued region off the coast of Somalia and the region between the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
According to the reports given by the United States 5th Fleet, the USS Ashland was first fired at by the skiff from some distance away. After the USS Ashland opened fire at the skiff, it was destroyed. However, all the six people in the skiff were rescued by the navy with the help of inflatable rigid hull boats. It has not been reported whether any of the six people on the destroyed skiff had suffered any injuries. However, they were taken to the navy ship, where they were provided with immediate medical aid.
None of the crew in the USS Ashland had suffered any injuries after the supposedly pirate skiff opened fire. Neither did the ship itself suffer ant damage. Thai was the third encounter between the United States navy and the pirate ships in the area. Pirate activity has been increasing in the region in an alarming rate, and despite a number of anti-piracy measures, the problem does not show any sign of being solved. Only last Monday, a similar incident occurred, and before that, another took place on Mar 31.
