Greek police arrest 6 domestic terrorism suspects
ATHENS, Greece — Greek police have arrested six people suspected of being members of Revolutionary Struggle, a terrorist group accused of a rocket strike against the U.S. Embassy and the shooting of a riot policeman, authorities said Sunday.
The five men and one woman, all in their 30s, were detained Saturday and will appear before a prosecutor to be charged with membership in Revolutionary Struggle, police spokesman Athanasios Kokalakis said.
A computer seized in one of three houses searched in the Athens area contained proclamations regarding terrorist attacks and plans for future attacks, including detailed road maps of possible attack sites. Police also found notes and bombmaking material.
About 150 masked youths in the central Athens district of Exarchia set fire to trash bins a few minutes after the police made the announcement. Some also threw stones at police searching a house in the district, known as a haven for anarchists.
Police responded with tear gas and made one arrest. Police have been searching the house since late Saturday in connection with the Revolutionary Struggle case.
There was a heavy police presence in and around Exarchia, with riot and motorcycle units deployed.
Revolutionary Struggle has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the shooting of a riot policeman last year and an anti-tank rocket strike against the U.S. Embassy in 2007.
