45,467 criminals convicted in eastern Indian state

A total of 45,467 criminals have been convicted in the last four years in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, according to state’s senior most police official.
Bihar’s director general of police Neelmani said of the total criminals convicted so far under the ongoing speedy trial against the outlaws, 3,622 were convicted in the last three months from January to March.
The police official said so far 102 criminals have been sentenced to hanging while 8,143 people have been awarded life imprisonment.
Similarly, 2,165 criminals have been awarded imprisonment up to 10 years or above for their involvement in crime, he said.
The speedy trials against the criminals were launched by the ruling National Democratic Alliance government in Bihar to contain the criminal activities.
The government believes the move has yielded desired results as the number of criminal cases has come down sharply in the last few years.
