A young couple was beheaded and their heads smashed beyond recognition before being thrown along a railway track for entering into inter-caste marraige in eastern India, police said today.

Police said Om Prakash Singh, a resident of Raghunathpur village in Bihar’s Buxur district, had fallen in love with a girl from the same village and wanted to marry her against the wishes of the girl’s family.

The family of girl who came from the wealthy and politically powerful family, had been constantly threatening to eliminate them, police said.

“We suspect the victims were killed with sharp-edged weapons and their bodies thrown along the railway track but we are investigating into their death” a senior railway officer said today.

“Honour killings” are quite common in Bihar and last year a school-going boy from a poor family was thrown before the running train with his hands and feet tied after he wrote a love letter to a girl from a powerful family.

In 2008, eight members of a boy family was hacked to death and their chopped body parts thrown into river Ganga for marrying a girl from rival caste in Bhagalpur district.
