AMRITSAR - A gangster and a policeman were injured when attackers from a rival gang opened fire inside the district court complex in this Punjab city Friday and later escaped, police said.

The shooting occurred when ganglord Jagtar Singh alias Boxer was taken to the court for a hearing in a criminal case.

Six members of the rival Ankur Lekhari gang opened fire with small arms, a police official said.

“They targeted Jitender Kumar alias Raju Chikna, one of Boxer’s close associates. Chikna was shot several times,” the police official said.

Chikna sustained head injuries and doctors have described his condition critical.

Police constable Jagdeep Singh, who was accompanying Boxer for his court appearance, also sustained injuries but he is out of danger, the police official said.

The assailants fled in an SUV and fired several rounds in air, terrifying onlookers.

Boxer is accused in various abduction, forgery and attempt to murder cases.

District police chief Pawan Kumar Rai said police were investigating the firing incident.

“We are investigating and we will catch the culprits,” Rai told IANS.

Police said the alleged assailants have been identified.
