Man kills himself in police lock-up, other critical

BHOPAL - Heavy police force has been deployed in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district where an irate crowd indulged in stone-pelting after hearing of a person committing suicide in a police lock-up late Tuesday, officials said Wednesday.

“Mumbai police had Tuesday arrested two people, Annu Pathan and Aqueel, in connection with a case of dacoity. They were handed over to the local police,” a police officer said.

“Both of them attempted suicide by hanging themselves. Annu Pathan died in the lock-up while Aqueel was admitted to a nearby hospital and is critical,” the officer added.

When locals came to know of the incident, they pelted stones at the police station and damaged vehicles parked outside.

Additional police force was rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control.
