CHENNAI - A day after a police officer was killed by a gang in broad daylight, the Tamil Nadu government Friday appointed Letika Saran as the Director General of Police (DGP) in place of K.P. Jain, who has proceeded on leave.
Saran was earlier Director General, Training, here.
The transfer has come a day after a gang killed Vetrivel, a sub inspector attached to Alwarkurichi police station in Tirunelveli district in broad daylight, minutes before the convoy of Ministers M.R.K. Paneerselvam and T.P.M. Mohideen Khan passed that spot.
According to police, seven people have been taken into custody in connection with the murder and initial enquiries has revealed that it is a case of mistaken identity. The real target was another sub inspector, Sivasubramanian.
The killing of the police official has sent shock waves across the state. The home portfolio is held by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Meanwhile, DMDK Chief Vijayakant and BJP state leader Pon. Radhakrishnan have demanded prompt action to punish the culprits.
The issue may find its echo in the state assembly currently in session.
