Greek doorman on trial for death of Australian man

LESVOS, Greece — A nightclub doorman in Greece is going on trial for the murder of a 20-year-old Australian tourist who was beaten to death in 2008 on the holiday island of Mykonos.

The trial, on the island of Lesvos, starts Wednesday.

Defendant Marios Antonopoulos is charged with the Aug. 2008 murder of Doujon Zammit, while three other Greek men have been charged with assault and complicity to murder.

Zammit’s father, Oliver, donated his son’s heart to a Greek-Australian, causing an outpouring of public sympathy in Greece for the Zammit family.

In a statement Wednesday on Lesvos, Oliver Zammit said his family hoped for the conviction of all four defendants.
