KOLKATA - Suspected Maoists Wednesday gunned down a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporter in West Bengals Purulia district, police said.
Bikas Mondal, 22, was fatally shot by a gang of four suspected Maoists at Kumardi village, Purulia Police Superintendent Sunil Chowdhury said.
Bikas was returning home this (Wednesday) evening riding on his motorcycle when four ultra left guerillas fired at him, Chowdhury told IANS over phone.
The modus operandi indicates the Maoists are behind the crime, said the district police chief.
Bikas was a CPI-M party supporter, while his father Mudhusudan Mondal was a member of CPI-Ms Balarumpur Zonal Committee, who was killed by the Maoists July 23, said CPI-M district committee member Manindra Gope.
Bikas is the 14th CPI-M supporter or leader to be killed by the Maoists in Purulia in the past eight months, Gope said.
Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura.
