KOLKATA - Suspected Maoists gunned down two supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, police said Monday.

“We were informed that two bodies of CPI-M supporters were found in Dhangori village of Jhargram sub-division Monday morning,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mukesh Kumar.

The victims were identified as Sushil Mahato and Paresh Rana of Murakati village.

Both men were dragged out of their houses Sunday night and shot dead. Their bodies were dumped within 20 feet of the gram panchayat office building which the Maoists had torched Friday, Kumar said.

“No Maoist poster claiming responsibility was found. But the modus operandi suggests the ultra Left guerrillas were involved,” he added.

Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura.
