NEW YORK - A Pakistani group with links to the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the failed car bomb that forced the evacuations of large parts of downtown New York City late Saturday.

A video by the group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, was discovered on the video-sharing website Youtube by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks activities of terrorism groups.

In the video, the speaker says the attempted attack would have been retribution for the deaths of two Islamist militant leaders in April.

Officials have not commented on the video, though some groups have expressed scepticism about the claim.

The failed bomb was discovered Saturday parked along New York City’s famous Times Square. Though smoke emanated from the car, there was no explosion. Investigations are ongoing.
