RAIPUR - The Chhattisgarh Police early Sunday conducted raids in Maoist hideouts in restive Bastar region to trace three tribal civilians who were abducted by the rebels Jan 2.

Relatives of the abducted tribals, Kanval Singh, Dhan Singh and Lalji Ram, residents of Upartonka village in Kanker district, informed police that Maoists came to the village Jan 2 and took them away accusing them of being police informers.

“We dont have any information about them. We are combing forests and raiding Maoist hideouts in forested and hilly areas in Kanker and are hopeful of getting them safe,” T.J. Longkumer, inspector general of police, Bastar, told reporters.

The sprawling 40,000 sq km Bastar region is considered the nerve centre of Maoists in India since late 1980s where over a thousand people have been killed in violence in the last one decade.
