KOLKATA - A group of suspected Maoists gunned down a villager in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, police said Sunday.

“Jamil Soren of Garra village near Lalgarh was dragged out of his house Saturday night and shot dead. Maoists are suspected to be behind the crime. But no Maoist posters were recovered from the spot, a senior police officer said.

Locals said Jamil was a former member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) - the youth wing of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

He recently joined the pro-tribal Maoist group - Peoples Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) and was active in the area.

Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
