CHENNAI - Security will be tightened more during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Tamil Nadu in January after a central security agency warned of a suspected LTTE attack on him, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi and other leaders, a top police official said Wednesday.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) we received an alert from a central agency about a probable attack on the prime minister and chief minister next month. We take all such alerts very seriously and will provide sufficient security to all,” state Director General of Police (DGP) Letika Saran told IANS.

The state police force provides security with or without alerts and confirmed Singh’s visit to Chennai next month to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress.

“We are also beefing up our intelligence machinery,” Saran added.

A LTTE suicide bomber killed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur while he was on an election campaign.
