SRINAGAR - Heavily armed separatist guerrillas attacked the residence of the Sopore police chief in Jammu and Kashmir by opening fire and hurling grenades, police said Monday.
The guerrillas fired at least four grenades followed by heavy firing from automatic weapons at the official residence of Superintendent of Police Altaf Khan in north Kashmir’s Sopore, a police official said.
Policemen guarding Khan’s residence returned the fire. No one was injured in the attack, though minor damage was caused to the building.
Security force reinforcements were rushed to the area for searches.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which triggered panic and tension in Sopore town, nearly 55 km from Srinagar.
