ISLAMABAD - Taliban militants killed five soldiers Friday at a checkpost in Pakistan’s South Waziristan region, hours after a rebel commander was killed in a US drone attack, Xinhua reported.

The checkpost is located in the Sararogha area. The security forces have launched a counter attack.

The attack came just hours after a US drone strike killed Taliban commander Qari Hussain in the North Waziristan tribal region. Three other people also died.

Qari Hussain is believed to have masterminded many suicide bomb attacks in Pakistan.

South Waziristan is the stronghold of the militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Its founder Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a drone attack in 2009.
