NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com) — A freshman from Rutgers University, Tyler Clementi was found dead last week. Reports suggests that he committed suicide by jumping off from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson river.
According to the officials, two of his classmates, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, planted a hidden camera in Clementi’s dorm room and used it to stream his “sex session” with a man over the Internet. This incident drove the 18 year old student to kill himself out of shame and despair. It’s a great regret that how a foolish prank can claim the life of a gifted student at a moments glance.
The police has arrested Ravi and Molly and charged them with two counts each of invasion of privacy for the Sept. 19 broadcast, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan. Ravi was additionally charged with two more invasion of privacy counts for trying to arrange the airing of a second session on Sept. 21, Kaplan said. Ravi’s lawyer was not available Wednesday for comment.
Why would anyone do such a thing to one another is beyond our understanding. We can’t even imagine how the poor boy must have felt. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.
But apart from Tyler Clementi, 3 more boys committed suicide in the last 3 weeks. Something is seriously going wrong. Proper steps should be taken so that no lives are prematurely lost. These tragedies need to be stopped.
