Accused Times Square bomber makes first court appearance

NEW YORK - The accused terrorist who allegedly tried to blow up a car in Times Square Tuesday made his first court appearance Tuesday in Manhattan.
Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized US citizen from Pakistan, was arrested May 3, aboard an airliner waiting to leave the US.
Two days earlier, he allegedly left a sport-utility vehicle vehicle packed with fuel, fireworks and other flammable substances parked in New York City’s landmark Times Square. The make-shift bomb did not detonate and was discovered by police after witnesses noticed the car giving off smoke.
Shahzad, who has reportedly been cooperating with authorities and confessed to mounting the attack alone, faces up to life in prison if convicted on charges, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted terrorism.
