Russian woman raises suspicion, flight makes emergency landing

KOLKATA - A Delhi-Kolkata-Dhaka Spicejet Flight with 123 passengers onboard made an emergency landing at the airport here Wednesday after the pilot and crew members found the movements of two Russian passengers, including a woman in a burqa, suspicious.

Airport sources said the Spicejet Flight 208 was allowed to make priority landing at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose international airport following a request from the pilot.

The aircraft was taken to the isolation bay and the two Russian passengers were detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawans, as bomb squad personnel, fire fighters and policemen ringed the plane.

Sources said the crew suspected that the woman in burqa was actually a man. However, the passenger was found to be a woman.

A through search of the aircraft also did not reveal anything suspicious.

After questioning the duo for hours, security personnel gave them a clean chit and allowed them to proceed to Bangladesh.
