MOGADISHU - At least 28 people were killed and 70 injured Saturday in a bomb attack on a mosque in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Witnesses said that two explosions shook the Abdala Shidiye Mosque, located near a busy market, during afternoon prayers.

Members of the radical Islamist al-Shabaab militia (Movement of Warrior Youth) are said to pray at the mosque.

One of the leaders of the militia was injured in the blast, according to reports.

He was holding a sermon when one of the explosions went off, local radio station Radio Shabelle reported.

Fighting in Mogadishu has escalated again in recent weeks. Several civilians were killed in fighting between soldiers and Islamist rebels in the same area just a few days before Saturday’s attack.
