Security council discusses Maoist menace

NEW DELHI - On the day when 75 central paramilitary personnel were killed in a Maoist offensive, the Left-wing extremists’ menace dominated the discussion at the National Security Council here Tuesday.
The one-hour meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and attended by National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, Home Minister P. Chidambaram, top officials and the three Services chiefs.
On Tuesday, Left-wing guerrillas ambushed and massacred at least 74 Central Reserve Police Force and a policeman in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh’s Dantewara district in the worst such attack since the Maoist rebellion erupted 43 years ago.
According to sources, the prime minister expressed his shock at the massacre and asserted his resolve to hit back at the Maoists.
The meeting also discussed the original item on the agenda, which was to discuss the development of the infrastructure along the India-China border.
