KOLKATA - Responding to Home Minister P.Chidambaram’s call to political parties to visit Maoist-hit Lalgarh and help in restoring normalcy, West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose Sunday said political activities cannot be started “with the smell of gunpowder in the atmosphere”.

“We want to start political activities and movements in Lalgarh. But political activities and political movements cannot be started with the smell of gunpowder in the atmosphere,” said Bose.

Chidambaram undertook a three-hour visit to the Lalgarh area in West Midnapore district Sunday to assess the situation in the Maoist stronghold.

“Of course, political party leaders must visit Lalgarh, meet people, speak to villagers,” Chidambaram said, before winding up his trip.
