Three militants, soldier killed in Kashmir gunfight

JAMMU - Three militants and an Indian Army soldier were killed in a fierce gun battle in the mountainous Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday evening, officials said.

According to police sources, a group of militants was reported to be hiding in Kandi area of Rajouri, 200 km northwest of Jammu. Security forces, comprising the army in the frontline backed by police, cordoned off the area. The gun battle between the hiding militants and security personnel began Tuesday evening.

Three militants and one army soldier were killed in the gunfight while another soldier was injured.

The identity of the killed militants is being ascertained, an official said.

In another gun battle going on in Kalakot in the same district, one police inspector posted as station house officer (SHO) in the area was injured.

The sources said both the operations were on-going. Four militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in two other gun battles in the Jammu region last saturday.
