CHANDIGARH - A special court Tuesday sentenced Babbar Khalsa terrorist Paramjit Singh Bheora to life imprisonment, after convicting him of involvement in the 1995 assassination of the then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

The verdict was pronounced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi in the premises of the high security model jail, where the trial was being held due to security reasons.

A fine of Rs.65,000 was also slapped on Bheora, who was Monday convicted of criminal conspiracy for his involvement in the assassination of Beant Singh by a suicide bomber, Dilawar Singh, Aug 31, 1995, at the high-security Punjab Civil Secretariat complex here.

Jagtar Singh Hawara, an accomplice of Bheora, was earlier sentenced to death in 2007 in the same case.

In January 2004, Hawara and Bheora, with two other prisoners, had escaped from the Burail jail, through an over-100 feet long tunnel they dug through their barrack.

They were arrested later by Delhi Police.

Beant Singh was largely credited with getting Punjab back to normalcy with the support of supercop K.P.S. Gill in the early 1990s aftere the separatist Khalistan militancy peaked.
