CHANDIGARH - A special court Monday convicted Babbar Khalsa terrorist Paramjit Singh Bhaura in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

Bhaura was held guilty by additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi in the trial held in the high security model jail here Monday.

The sentence will be announced Tuesday.

Bhaura was held guilty for criminal conspiracy and for his involvement in the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh by a suicide bomber, Dilawar Singh, Aug 31, 1995 at the high-security Punjab civil secretariat complex here.

Jagtar Singh Hawara, an accomplice of Bhaura, was sentenced to death in 2007 in the same case.

In January 2004, Hawara and Bhaura, along with two other prisoners, had escaped from the Burail jail through an over 100-feet tunnel that they dug through their barrack.

They were arrested later by Delhi Police.

Beant Singh was largely credited in getting Punjab back to normalcy with the support of supercop K.P.S. Gill in the early 1990s.
