BHUBANESWAR - Maoist guerrillas attacked a police patrol party and shot dead three policemen and injured 10 in Orissa’s Gajapati district early Wednesday, police said.
The Maoists opened fire when about 30 policemen were on their way to raid a rebel camp in a forested area at Ambajhari in Gumma block near Parlakhemundi town, about 350 km from here, on the basis of a tip off, Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Marik told IANS.
“We lost two special operation group (SOG) personnel and a local policeman,” he said.
In the attack, 10 other policemen have sustained bullet injuries; of these, four are in critical condition.
“It was a frontal attack when our party was going on foot to raid a rebel camp in Ambajhari forest,” District Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Arora said.
Policemen who were critically injured have been shifted to Visakhapatnam and the others are being treated in Parlakhemundi.
The cops who died are Sanjit Tirkey, Balram Pradhan and Dipak Sambhoi.
In yet another daring act in Gajapati district, the rebels damaged three mobile towers at Birikot in Mohana block early Wednesday.
