SRINAGAR - Two separatist militants were killed and two security personnel injured in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town, police said Friday.

Soldiers from the counter-insurgency force Rashtriya Rifles, the police Special Operations Group (SOG) and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded a house in Krankshivan area of Sopore, some 55 km from here, late Thursday following a tip that militants were holed up inside, a police officer said.

“Both the guerrillas were killed and two security men, a Rashtriya Rifles (RR) ‘jawan’ (soldier) and a CRPF trooper were injured in the encounter (gun battle) which has now ended,” the police officer said.

“The militants were asked to surrender but they fired at our men resulting in the gunfight,” he said.

Both the militants belonged to the banned Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, the police said.

On Monday, separatist guerrillas carried out a series of attacks in the town, killing a policeman and injuring nine people. One militant was also killed.
