SRINAGAR - Two separatist guerrillas were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in a forest in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district early Thursday.

Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police surrounded the Wanderbal forest area near Handwara, 80 km from here, on a tip-off about the presence of a group of guerrillas there, a police officer said.

“As the security forces were busy searching the area, hiding militants opened fire at them, triggering an encounter which ended late this (Thursday) morning. Two militants were killed in the gunfight and searches are on,” he added.

Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the slain guerrillas, the officer said.

On Wednesday, a top guerrilla commander of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen was gunned down by security forces on the outskirts of north Kashmir’s Sopore town.
