Two militants killed in Kashmir shootout

SRINAGAR - Two separatist militants of the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district Wednesday in a shootout with security forces, police said.

A senior police officer said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and the special operations group (SOG) of the state police surrounded a house in Kuchwa Mukam village, 68 km from here, early Wednesday morning following specific information about the presence of guerrillas inside.

The hiding militants were asked to surrender, upon which they started indiscriminate gunfire at the security forces,” he said.

Two militants identified as Sallahudin and Lateef of Jaish-e-Muhammad were killed in the gunfight. We have recovered the bodies of the slain militants and also their weapons, the officer said.

The house in which the guerrillas had been hiding was destroyed in the gunfight and the bodies of the guerrillas recovered from the debris, police said.

The gunbattle took place as union Home Minister P. Chidambaram arrived in winter capital Jammu to review the overall security situation in the state.
