SRINAGAR - A prominent Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist and his nephew were critically injured when guerrillas attacked them in Kashmir’s Kulgam district Thursday, police said.

A senior police officer told IANS that guerrillas barged into the house of the CPI(M) activist, Muhammad Ismail Lone, in Manand Gophan village of the district, 70 km from here, and fired at him from a close range.

“Lone received critical bullet wounds and while the militants were fleeing from the spot, they also fired at his nephew Gulzar Ahmed Malik, injuring him too,” the officer said.

Malik had rushed to Lone’s house after hearing the crackle of gunshots.

“Both have been referred by doctors in Kulgam to Srinagar for specialised treatment,” the officer said.

Senior police officers visited the village and searches have been ordered in the area.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the CPI-M activist.
