UN mission in Nepal may conclude mandate in May

NEW YORK - The UN Security Council Thursday extended its peace mission’s mandate in Nepal until May 15 with the request that all work related to the peace process in that nation be completed by that date.
The mission, with 278 staff, will make all arrangements with the government before its withdrawal, the council said in a resolution it adopted to terminate the mandate. The mission has been assisting Nepal to settle the conflict with armed Maoist rebels.
The council said it welcomed the understanding between the government of Nepal and the Maoist Unified Communist Party of Nepal to implement a timetable for the integration of Maoist soldiers into society by May 15.
The council urged all political parties in Nepal to “expedite the peace process and to work together in the spirit of cooperation, consensus and compromise” in order to move the country to a peaceful and democratic period.
