WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama Saturday asked Americans to observe the 9/11 anniversary as a day of "unity and renewal" as "it was not a religion that attacked us that September day, it was Al Qaeda".

WASHINGTON - Houses of worship in New York tolled their bells at 8.46 a.m., the moment the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center this day in 2001, as America observed the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

NEW YORK - The commemorative ceremony for the nearly 3,000 people killed by terrorists nine years ago began Saturday with a minute of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the exact time when a hijacked commercial airplane struck one of the World Trade Center's twin towers in Lower Manhattan.
