RAIPUR - Several Maoists were killed in a gun-fight between police and the rebels Tuesday afternoon in Chhattisgarh’s violence-hit Bastar region but none of the dead bodies could be recovered, police said.

“We fought a fierce gun battle with Maoists throughout the afternoon period in a thickly forested area of Bijapur district and several rebels were killed but we did not recover their bodies as their comrades carried away the dead bodies of their colleagues deep into the forest,” Superintendent of Police Rajendra Das told reporters in Bijapur town, headquarters of the district.

He claimed that several blood stains were found at the gun battle site, located some 500 km south of Raipur, that suggested that the Maoists had suffered serious casualties. The policemen did not suffer any casualty or injury in the fight.

Das heaped praise on the some 40 policemen drawn from the district force (DF) and the special police officers (SPOs) “who fought bravely and inflicted severe casualties on the guerrillas”.
