MOSUL - Eight people were killed, five of them police officers, in two separate incidents in the northern Iraqi province of Mosul Tuesday.

In the western part of Mosul, five Iraqi policemen were killed and three others wounded when a car bomb targeted their patrol.

Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces said they killed three gunmen and arrested seven others in a security operation in the eastern part of Mosul, located some 400 km north of Baghdad.

The sweep was aimed at “hunting down armed groups in the village of al-Buraq, east of Mosul,” said a security source.

The area in and around Mosul is among the most ethnically diverse and dangerous in Iraq, where insurgents mount near-daily attacks.

On Monday at least eight people were killed, including four policemen, and some 50 people injured in two suicide attacks in the western part of Iraq in Ramadi.
