Don’t make hasty claims after terror strike: Pakistani daily
By IANSMonday, October 25, 2010
ISLAMABAD - The government must restrain itself from revealing the names of suspects every time there is a terror attack, a Pakistani daily said in an editorial after a man, named as suspected suicide bomber, returned home.
The government and the law enforcement officials need to seriously rethink their habit of immediately jumping to conclusions, Dawn said in its editorial.
The public has every right to know but shoddy claims not only hamper the probe, but also put people’s reputations at stake, it said.
The editorial referred to a suicide terror attack on a shrine in Karachi that took place early October.
The authorities referred to a youth as the suicide bomber, but he later turned up at home after reading media reports that his family had been arrested in connection with the case.
These gaffes reflect that officials make half-baked, hasty claims to assuage public anger over security failures, as well as that the criminal investigation process in Pakistan is an incredibly flawed one, the editorial said.
