RANCHI - A police sub-inspector was killed and a policeman was injured in a gunfight with Maoists in Jharkhand’s Dumka district Friday, authorities said.

“Sadanand Singh, officer in-charge of Jama police station in Dumka district, was killed. Helicopter has been sent to bring the injured policeman for treatment to Ranchi,” Jharkhand police spokesperson R.K. Mallik told IANS.

A police team on patrol spotted Maoists in jungle areas of Dumka, around 400 km from Ranchi. “Maoists started firing when they saw the policemen and the gunfight began,” another police official said.

A combing operation has been launched to arrest those Maoists involved in the incident, the police official added.
