We hope to get something from Pakistan on 26/11: Chidambaram

NEW DELHI - Striking a positive note after the recent talks with Islamabad, India Saturday said it was hopeful of getting “something” from Pakistan on the dossiers provided to it last month on 26/11 Mumbai attacks and is willing to give it some time in this regard.

“We hope to get something from Pakistan. Let’s give them some time. It has been only a month since we have had formal contact,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here when asked about the dossiers given to Islamabad to act against the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks.

“I travelled there only exactly four weeks back. Let us keep our fingers crossed,” he said.

Chidambaram’s comments indicate that some tangible action by Pakistan on 26/11 could reverse the acrimony that followed the July 15 talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries.

During talks with his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik in Islamabad June 25, Chidambaram had given additional information on the Nov 26, 2008 Mumbai attacks, based on disclosures made by Pakistani-American Laskhar-e-Taiba operative David Headley.

Headley, according to sources, had revealed names of key LeT operatives and the involvement of some officers of Pakistan’s military-ISI establishment in the Mumbai carnage.

Ahead of the July 15 talks, Home Secretary G.K. Pillai had said that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was involved in planning the Mumbai terror spree from beginning to end. The Pakistani side seized on his remarks and accused India of selectively focusing on terror to the exclusion of other important issues like Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen and the Sir Creek.
