LONDON - A Briton was left dumbstruck when he accidentally broke a garden gnome and out popped a statue of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

Joseph Balfour, 73, who lives in the tiny village of Mossblown, Ayrshire, said: “I was watering some bedding plants and I caught the hose round a gnome. It fell over and broke.

“I picked it up and noticed the wee fella in there looking at me. I recognised Osama right away. He’s a pretty famous guy,” The Sun Wednesday quoted him as saying.

Joseph had bought the gnome statue at a garden centre three years ago. He said: “Half the village has been round to look at the statue.”

Mary, Joseph’s wife, wasn’t too pleased with the find and she wanted the statue to be thrown in the bin.

But she lamented: “Now he’s got it inside the house like a treasure.”

Joseph said that if the Al Qaeda chief ever wanted to hide in his village, “he’d have to hold a pint in his hand. This is a miners’ village and we like a drink”.
