Pakistani terror suspect held in Britain on US warrant

LONDON - British police Wednesday arrested a Pakistani national wanted for trial on terrorism charges in the US, Scotland Yard said.

Abid Naseer, 24, was among 12 men arrested in connection with a suspected terrorist plot in northern England last year.

But he recently won a court battle to stay in Britain, where a judge ruled that his safety could not be guaranteed if he was returned to Pakistan.

Scotland Yard said Naseer had been arrested “pursuant to a provisional arrest warrant issued on July 7, 2010, at the request of the US government”.

“Naseer’s extradition is sought by the United States government for the purposes of standing trial,” a statement said.

A spokesman said Naseer was accused by the US authorities of providing material for a foreign terrorist organisation, providing support for a terrorist conspiracy and of plotting to use a destructive device.
