GUWAHATI - A massive security alert was sounded in Assam Wednesday with intelligence inputs of serial explosions by the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) prompting the railways to either cancel or suspend several trains.

A police spokesperson said radio intercepts of the NDFB revealed a plan to trigger a series of blasts across Assam, mainly targeting trains, bridges and other vital installations, besides security forces and public places.

“A state of high alert was sounded across Assam with security forces deployed in strength to foil any such terror designs of the NDFB,” a police official said requesting anonymity.

The Northeast Frontier Railways, meanwhile, suspended or cancelled at least six long distance trains for security reasons.

“In view of security concerns about safety of trains, it has been decided to divert or cancel six to seven trains until further notice,” a railway statement said.

Earlier in the day some trains were detained with railway police carrying out checks of tracks with information of bombs being planted there.
