KOLKATA - Two security personnel and several Maoist guerrillas were injured in a gun battle in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Wednesday, police said.

The Maoists, however, managed to flee with their injured colleagues after the shootout in Sonamukhi village in Jhargram sub-division, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Zulfiqar Hassan said.

“The Maoists, hiding in the village, started firing on the forces when they were patrolling. The forces retaliated,” Hassan said.

“In the firefight, two security personnel and several Maoists were injured. The battle lasted for several hours,” he added.

A sub-inspector of Jhargram police station has been hospitalised. A sub-inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force’s elite Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) was also injured, a police source said.

In West Bengal, the paramilitary troopers and state police have been battling the guerrillas in vast areas of West Midnapore district.
