KABUL - Two explosions rocked the Afghanistan capital Wednesday as President Hamid Karzai opened a “jirga” or peace assembly.

The National Consultative Peace Jirga was aimed at ending conflicts and ensuring peace in the militancy-hit country, Xinhua reported.

Around 1,600 people including tribal chieftains, parliamentarians, social and political figures as well as government officials gathered under a giant tent in Kabul to discuss the ways and means on how to enhance the government-initiated reconciliation process with the Taliban.

DPA adds: Hamid Karzai was not hurt in the incident.

The Taliban are boycotting the jirga, which they said was aimed at safeguarding the interests of the US and other NATO members.
