BHUBANESWAR - The Orissa government will provide free land for families of policemen who die fighting Maoists to build houses, Revenue and Disaster Minister S.N. Patro said Tuesday.

The martyr’s family will have the choice to select land either in urban or rural areas. The family will have to apply for it to the revenue department,” Patro told IANS.

According to official figures, Maoist guerrillas killed 145 policemen and 93 civilians in Orissa from 2001 to 2009.

The state government now provides compensation of Rs.8 lakh, insurance money of Rs.10 lakh and a job for the next of kin to each policeman killed by Maoists.
