PESHAWAR - At least three powerful blasts targeting the US consulate rocked this Pakistani city Monday afternoon, reportedly causing casualties, witnesses said.
One resident said up to five blasts took place in quick succession near the consulate on Hayat Avenue in an area also housing many houses and other buildings.
Thick smoke billowed from the blast site, and journalists reported hearing gunshots soon after. A fire broke out.
Geo TV reported that security forces had cordoned off the area. Ambulances with their sirens blaring rushed to the area.
One witness said it appeared to be a suicide attack. The US consulate as well as the American embassy in Islamabad gave no details.
Journalists were asked to keep away from the area by security forces who feared more blasts.
