RAIPUR - Five Maoist guerrillas were arrested Saturday in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar region after a brief gunfight, police said.

The gunbattle began when a group of Maoists opened fire at a police search squad in Bijapur district, some 450 km south of capital Raipur, and police retaliated.

“The joint team of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), district force and the special police officers put the Maoists under heavy attack in a thickly forested area and finally they sneaked back into the forest but we managed to apprehend five of them,” Superintendent of Police R.N. Das, told IANS over phone from Bijapur.
