GUWAHATI - Two tribal separatists were killed in a gunfight with security forces Tuesday and four more arrested with weapons and explosives, officials said.

A police spokesperson said a joint team of Assam police commandos and army soldiers raided Bhanshijhara village in Kokrajhar district, about 220 km west of here.

“Based on specific inputs, the security team raided the village and soon there was a fierce gunfight,” a senior police officer said.

Two militants of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were shot dead in the gun battle.

“Once the gun battle stopped, we managed to capture three women NDFB cadres and a male militant from the spot,” the officer said.

An AK-56 rifle, three hand grenades, and some ammunition were recovered from the group.

“The NDFB group was planning a major strike in and around the district ahead of Republic Day. So we consider it a major success eliminating two of them and arresting the other four,” the police officer said.
